The entrance to Dogo Onsen. Despite its 3 stars in the Michelin Green Guide, there's no signage outside in foreign languages. You can get a very supercilious and higgledy-piggledy booklet in English that says, "There is a difference in bathing styles between Japan and Western countries. Please read page 5 about how to take a Japanese style bath in this booklet and follow the Japanese way." Could you be more bureaucratic about it if you tried? When I used to go to the magnificent Victorian baths in Manchester, I bathed in exactly the same 'style' as in Japan.
